The deadline for the complete implementation of Canada’s electronic logging device legislation has been pushed back to January 1, 2023.

The transportation industry has been under “great pressure” for the past two years, according to officials, which has contributed to the delay in enforcement.

The ELD regulation, which also applies to U.S. carriers operating across international borders, was set to take effect on June 12, 2021. Given the lack of ELDs certified to Canada’s ELD requirements at the time, the Canadian government declared just months before that date that it will phase in full enforcement over a 12-month period. The full implementation of the law was set to begin on June 12 of this year.

On June 13, 2019, Canadian authorities announced a rule requiring federally regulated commercial vehicle operators to utilize ELD devices.
